How can you find a builder you can trust?
More importantly, how can you find out if you can't trust your builder.
Warren Buffet suggests that you do all of your thinking before you sign that contract. It is difficult to find out about your builder, especially if you are fromout of town, like we were. We thought we took all of the correct steps. The builder and his project manager really appeared to be honest, and nice people. We were fooled. We called all of the references that they gave us. Not surprisingly none of them raised any red flags. Why would they? Do you think the builder would refer me to someone who he angered? Do you think he would now refer a prospective client to me! Not likely.
So, how do you find out about the builder you are going to hire?
You know already that the Better Business Bureau is no help. It occurred to me that court records might hold some clues. Court records are in the public domain. Three years after "divorcing" my builder, I spent a couple of hours in the district court house checking the builder out. Here is what I found...

Do you want to hire a builder who, in four years has sued three subcontractors and three owner/clients and who has been sued twice himself?
As mentioned above, this information is not available on the Better Business Bureau's web site. But, it is all available at the court house.
